Victims of Crime

If you have been injured as a direct result of a criminal act in Victoria, you may be entitled to claim assistance from the victims of crime tribunal as a ‘primary victim’.

Primary victims may be entitled to claim the following:

  1. Special financial assistance
  2. Counselling expenses
  3. Loss of damage of clothing worn at the time of the offence
  4. Reasonable safety related expenses
  5. Loss of earnings
  6. Other expenses to assist in recovery

If you are injured as a result of witnessing a criminal act, or are a parent/guardian of a primary victim who was under the age of 18 at the time of the crime, you may be entitled to claim assistance as a ‘secondary victim’.

If a close family member, dependant or someone you shared an intimate close personal relationship dies as a result of a criminal act, you may be entitled to claim as a related victim.

In addition, primary victims may be entitled to pursue a claim against the offender for damages, or to make a Sentencing Act claim. Further, if the criminal act was committed at work or in a transport accident, then you may be entitled to additional compensation under WorkCover and TAC.
